Barns wallpaper for the Eccellence show

2. Juni 2009 von admin

Barns wallpaper is the world’s first environmentally optimised wallpaper, designed in Berlin especially for the Eccellence show.

img_1700_web

img_1713_web

Barns is inspired by the farms of our grandparents. The knowledge of growing crop, using the old farming mentality of not creating waste, living in independent coherent communities and self-supportive structures formed the basis of a sustainable society.

Barns wallpaper symbolises past rural farming, which has been eroded by our consumption oriented, individualism driven, non-locally sourced and flexibility focussed society.

Barns wallpaper calls on us to develop a new sustainable blueprint by learning from our roots.

Barns contains paper certified according to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Barns colour scheme applies only 4 defined pigments and a selected binder meeting our environmental criteria. Barns was produced without further chemical additions.

Barns is produced in Brandenburg, the paper is sourced from Saxony.

The chemical content of Barns was environmentally screened and optimised by Ralf Ketelhut from Stoffstromdesign. The designer would like to remain in the background.

Cradle to Cradle

Cradle to Cradle Design Principles

After more than 20 years of pioneering and developing ground-breaking products in cooperation with corporations, the Cradle to Cradle Design Principles - developed by Michael Braungart and William McDonough – are on their way in becoming mainstream. Besides up to 150 optimised products, the Netherlands are on their way to adopt Cradle to Cradle design principles as a country.

Cradle to Cradle products are:

  • designed for closing material loops, either biological or technical
  • eliminated from chemicals causing human health and environmental hazards

The aim is to transform industry by creating products for cradle-to-cradle cycles, whose materials are circulated in closed loops. Maintaining materials in closed loops maximizes material value without damaging ecosystems. This catchy phrase summarises the logic: “Waste equals Food”. The core of the cradle to cradle principle is to positively define the material content of products aimed at eliminating human health and environmental hazards and enabling ecologically sound closed loops. In this “chemical” design process, products are “detoxified” by an assessment protocol.

If you have not heard of the methodology by now, it is about time to get familiar with the concept. Please go to the following links for more in depth information:

Green electronics

Green electronics

Our digital lifestyle is providing us with a vast amount of electronic waste, which is causing many problems from an environmental point of view as many hazardous materials are used in electronic devices.

Over the years Greenpeace has monitored the performance of electronics made by leading manufacturers. The latest Green Electronics Survey focuses on four main topics:

  • Use of hazardous chemical substances
  • Energy use
  • The Product lifecycle
  • Environmental data availability on the product

The environmental standard of electronic products is improving, but no device scores well on all points yet. The race is still open to develop the ultimate green electronic product. To encourage you to reflect the environmental impact of electronics, Eccellence presents several electronics based upon the Greenpeace study.

Energy efficiency

7. Mai 2009 von admin

Energy Efficiency

In our digital, electronics and flexibility dominated lifestyle little attention is paid on purchasing energy efficient products, however for example almost a half of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions actually come from energy used every day - at home and when we travel.

To generate that energy, we burn fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) that produce greenhouse gases - in particular carbon dioxide (CO2). Cars are a huge problem but the truth is that more CO2 comes from the energy we use at home. The average UK household creates around 6 tonnes of CO2 a year, and it’s that same CO2 that’s changing our climate and damaging the environment.

Therefore using the most energy efficient products available sounds pretty cool.

The energy efficient products we selected for the show are based upon a Europe-wide research project: Topten. The Topten portal presently gives access to 13 national Topten websites and presents the ‘Best Products of Europe’:

A simple click gives access to a selection of the most energy efficient products, featuring pictures, functions, price and average energy costs.

It is possible to contribute, so inform yourself and think twice before purchasing electrical goods.

Solar products

Solar products

Ultimately using products which make direct use of renewable energy are the best solution on generating climate neutral energy and to gradually minimise our dependency on fossil and nuclear fuels.

Therefore Eccellence chose to focus on solar based products. Solar based products use the sun as energy source. Especially in developing countries with limited electricity infrastructure using solar energy is really helpful.

We have chosen several portable solar based products for our flexible digital lifestyle and for cooking. Furthermore we found a beer produced by using solar energy and awesome ecologically correct sunglasses.
